Meet the BBJ Artistic Director/Founder: Debra Vega

Debra started Broadway Brings Joy in the summer of 2022 when she was looking for a summer musical theater program for her 8 year old son and found that all of the local programs were all filled up! Her son encouraged her to start her own program, even helping her come up with the name, and the rest is history!…

Debra started dancing at age 4 and basically never stopped. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Dance Performance/Theater, traveled the world as a musical theater professional, and lived in NYC for 10 years dancing on Broadway and as a Radio City Rockette.

Debra has also taught dance throughout her performing career and beyond, now over 30 years. She currently teaches at the prestigious CLI Conservatory Pre-Professional Program in Easthampton, MA and Massachusetts Academy of Ballet in Holyoke, MA. You might also see some of her classes online through the CLI Studios subscription program.

Debra is always trying to figure out ways to include her now 11-year old singing/dancing son in her creative endeavors, so she strives to choreograph local musicals that can also involve him. Including professional productions, schools and community theater, Debra has choreographed over 30 musical productions to date!

In addition to dance, Debra is the Co-Director of Vega Yoga Mobile with her husband Aaron, bringing yoga to businesses, community organizations, non-profits, or to you virtually via zoom. She supports her community as the Chair of the Board of Directors of Girl’s inc of the Valley, and serves on the Carlos Vega Fund for Social Justice.

You can follow Debra online at @debradvega, @broadway_brings_joy or @vegayoga_mobile.

Courtney just completed her Masters of Social Work degree this past summer of 2024 and is excited to join the team of councilors at Holyoke High School this Fall. She completed her undergraduate degree in Social Work from Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee, MA in May of 2023.

Courtney is a lover of all things music and dance! She grew up in her dance studio studying all types of dance with a focus in hip hop and jazz. She also was in her Elementary, Middle and High School Show Choirs from the second grade until graduating. She performed music selections from “Journey” to “Disney,” and everything in between.

She has also worked with kids/teens in many different settings, most recently as the Assistant to the Director of the Eureka! Maddie Moriarty

Dance/Class Sub and Camp Assistant

Maddie has been dancing for 15 years and has been involved in community theater for 11 years. She has taken tap, jazz, contemporary, ballet, pointe, and modern classes at The Dance Company in Springfield, MA since the age of three. She is also in her second year of teaching tap and ballet to ages 4-6 at The Dance Company.

As for theatre, Maddie fell in love with Broadway and New York City at an early age and for years now Maddie has traveled into NYC to see Broadway shows that captivate, inspire, and make her dance in her seat. As for her own theatre career, Maddie has been in countless shows with St. Michael's Players of East Longmeadow, MA. She is currently on the Board as a Jr. Board Member and runs the Social Media and Website for the theatre. After a break because of Covid, Maddie decided she wanted to join the offstage team and start working closely with the production team, volunteers, and cast. This discovery has been life changing for Maddie as it led her to work alongside Debra Vega as her assistant on multiple shows. With all of Debra Vega's wisdom being poured into her, Maddie choreographed a musical at the age of 17.

Today, you can still find Maddie taking dance classes, going to dance conventions, and competing to perfect her craft. You will also find her in the theatre doing whatever is needed to get a show ready for an audience.

Jillian Scott

Tap and Jazz Sub

Jillian has been dancing since she was four years old studying ballet and pointe at the Massachusetts Academy of Ballet (MAB) as well as taking Debra Vega’s jazz class at MAB since she was sixteen years old. She also started taking jazz, tap, lyrical, and african dance classes at the Footloose School of Dance at nine years old and attended The Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory four week long summer intensive in July 2023. At six years old Jillian started competitive baton twirling with the Belchertown Twirlers and attended the 2018 AYOP Nationals in Indiana placing 9th overall out of forty other competitors in the Dance Show Twirl category. In May 2024, Jillian graduated high school and her dance studies at MAB and will be continuing to study ballet and modern dance at the University of Hartford as a Ballet Pedagogy major

While studying ballet at MAB, Jillian has had the opportunity to teach the TOT Creative Movement ballet class (ages 3-5) in 2022-2024 as well as the Pre-Ballet 2 class (ages 6 and 7) in 2022-2023. Through these opportunities, Jillian has discovered a love for teaching dance and is dedicated to helping the next generation of dancers find their own love for dance. Jillian believes that one of the best qualities (and arguably the most important quality) a dancer can have is optimism and positivity. As someone who knows the challenges of dance and how easy it is to be hard oneselves, Jillian wants to teach confidence to dancers and show them that believing in your own potential is key to being a successful dancer.

Jillian is hopeful and determined to pursue a professional dance career in her future and is excited to be a part of the wonderful BBJ team teaching beginner tap!

Stephanie Craven

Acting Teacher, Acting Coach, Private Acting or Singing Lessons

Stephanie is a South Hadley native and is thrilled to be a part of the BBJ team! She received her BFA In Musical Theater from Syracuse University. She has performed professionally locally, regionally, on a National Tour, on camera and off-Broadway. Performing everything from Shakespeare to Golden Age musicals to new works. Some credits include National Tour: Charlie Brown Christmas (Violet, Lucy u/s) Off-Broadway: Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (Hallie Jackson), Xena Warrior Musical (Aphrodite), The Ten Commandments (Sephora) Regional: Beauty & the Beast (Belle), Macbeth (Witch), As You Like It (Audrey) Guys and Dolls (Ensemble, Sarah Brown u/s). She has also studied and performed Improv comedy for the past 12 years and loves to leave 'em laughin’.

Growing up in Western MA, Stephanie was driven around by her supermom of a mother to countless rehearsals, lessons and shows, sometimes even traveling to New York City twice a month just for a voice lesson! After going to school and pursuing her career, the wind has blown her back into the valley and she can't help but think this is where the real opportunity is. A chance to merge her love for kids and theater into one. A chance to share every ounce of everything she has learned over the years with people from Western MA! To be that one person who tells a little-kid-but-big-dreamer that they CAN. They CAN accomplish their dreams and do what might seem impossible, if they have got the talent and grit. To be that person to help guide parents in the right direction and inform them on what is happening in today's industry. Or just to be that person that is able to have fun and be silly and help instill self confidence in the little superstars she KNOWS are out there.

"I have truly been blessed to be given the opportunities and life experiences that I have had. I want to share. I want to teach. I want to help, guide, and have fun. I want you to join the academy because I bet my bottom dollar we will make your little star SHINE even brighter than they already do." -Stephanie

We can’t wait to work with you!
